Rune M. Oberg, 87, and Carolyn M. Oberg, 84, both of Moline, IL, died Wednesday, November 08, 2017, at home. 

 

A family directed memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, November 11, 2017, with a visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at Homewood Evangelical Free Church, 3303 60th Street, Moline.  Cremation rites have been accorded and burial of cremains will be at the National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal at a later date.  Memorials may be made to Partners With Ethiopia.  Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.

 

Rune and Carolyn were married on August 13, 1953, in Carthage, IL.  They are survived by their four children; son, Thomas (Bonnie) Oberg, Brooklyn Park, MN; daughters, Laura Ann (Wilson) Green, Niles, MI, Jennifer (Craig Mullins) Oberg, Haiku, Maui, and Ingrid (Dan) Olson, Golden Valley, MN; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; Rune’s sister, Doris Oberg, Moline, IL; Carolyn’s brothers, Nels Lindell, Moline, IL, and John (Sharon) Lindell, Paragould, AR.  They were preceded in death by their parents; Carolyn’s sister, Barbara Hillyer; Rune’s brothers, Arne Oberg and Bernhard Oberg.

 

Rune was born on August 8, 1930, in Moline, IL, the son of Fritz and Hilda Malmgren Oberg.  He was employed by the Moline Dispatch; the Davenport Times and the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, Oshkosh, WI.  Rune, a 1948 Moline High School graduate, also attended Augustana and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh.  He served in both the Army and Navy during the Korean War; honorably discharged from both branches.  His years in the Navy included one year in San Diego and three years in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as the photographer for Com Sub Pacific.  He received special commendation from the commander for innovative modifications for the submarine’s cameras.  One of his fondest memories, later in life, was taking the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

 

Carolyn was born on August 20, 1933, in Moline, IL, the daughter of Nels and Edna Miner Lindell.  She graduated from Moline High School in 1951, then in 1954 from the Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses.  She was employed as a RN in area hospitals and overseas at Queens Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii.  She retired as a Bible teacher at Temple Christian School, Moline, after 17 years.

 

In retirement, they spent 10 winters in Maui, Hawaii.  Homewood Free Church was their church home in Moline.

 

When asked about their long happy life, Rune replied, “be sure you pick parents from Sweden.”
