Samuel W. Haglund, 91, of East Moline, formerly of Orion, IL, died Monday, November 13, 2017, at Park Vista Assisted Living, East Moline, IL.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service on Thursday, November 16, 2017, at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., 1301 4th Street, Orion.  Cremation rites will be accorded and private inurnment will be at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion. 

 

Samuel was born on January 16, 1926, in Princeton, IL, the son of Clara Neal and Carl Haglund.  He married Virginia Pettifer Rossi on April 19, 1947, in Moline, IL.  He worked for IH Farmall in tractor repair, retiring in 1981 after 39 years.  Following his retirement, he continued to farm in Orion and help the Henry County Road Commission.

 

Samuel was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion, U.A.W. Local 2282 in Rock Island, the Orion American Legion Post 255, and the Moline Turner’s Club. He was a very gifted woodworker and built homes specializing in cabinetry and electrical work.  He also built his home in Hawaii.

 

Samuel was a veteran, having proudly served in the United States Army in Okinawa under General Douglas MacArthur.  He felt honored to take part in the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities and was proud of his brick at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Orion.

 

Samuel loved music and was a jazz enthusiast, especially enjoying Bix music.  He liked walking at the mall and playing golf. After losing his sight, Samuel listened to many talking books.

 

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Haglund, East Moline, IL; children, Norma Lee (Donald) Anderson, Rio, IL, Joseph (Marilyn) Rossi, Murray, KY, Carol (Jim) McDermott, St. Charles, MO; son, Samuel Neal (Jennifer) Haglund, Wilmington, NC, Marilyn (John) Phipps, Key Largo, FL; 16 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 21 great great grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Theresa Anderson Abel.
