Nellie E. Porter

Nellie E. Bartell Porter, 104, of Rock Island, IL, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Silver Cross Health & Rehab, Rock Island, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park.  Memorials may be made to Memorial Christian Church, 1624 Ave. of the Cities, Moline, IL, 61265.

Nellie was born on August 25, 1911, in Princeton, IL, the thirteenth child of John F. and Gertrude Viola Chasey Johnson.  She married Elder Bartell on September 26, 1929, in Moline, IL.  She later married James L. Porter on March 26, 1953, in Rock Island, and he preceded her in death on March 24, 1990.

Nellie started as a telephone operator for Illinois Bell in Moline and Servus Rubber Co. Rock Island. She was a member of Memorial Christian Church, Moline. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, and baking for her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna, and husband, Charles Porter, of Ft. Myers, FL; four grandchildren, Randy (Joy) Porter, Kim Dundy, David (Kris) Porter, and Darin (Dina) Porter; five great grandchildren; stepson, Gary Porter; stepdaughter; Jackie McGuire of Rock Island; many step-grandchildren and great- grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a special niece, Carol Hancock.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Carey, seven brothers, and seven sisters.
