December 21, 1928 — May 12, 2015

Albert Arthur Lange, 86, of Orion, IL, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Orion United Methodist Church, 407 12th Avenue, Orion. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A committal service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2015, at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal, where military honors will be conducted by the Orion American Legion Post 255. Those wishing to attend should meet at the Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion, at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning to drive in procession. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.

Al was born on December 21, 1928, in Rock Island, IL, the son of Paul and Marie Fry Lange. He married Marcia Tengwall in 1957. He later married Eleanor E. Gayman on May 22, 1976, and she preceded him in death on October 13, 2014. He was extremely proud of his "very smart" blended family.

He worked as a foreman at Long Manufacturing, Material Products, and Emco. He retired from Deere in the early 1980s. Al enjoyed woodworking and loved all things outdoors: fishing, boating, camping, hunting and campfires. Especially with a cigarette in his hand!

He believed in public service and helping friends and family. All you had to do was ask and he was there. He was a volunteer extraordinaire having been awarded the highest honors for the Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow and the Studs Terkel Humanitarian Award for volunteerism. But it was always about the cause, not what HE did.

Albert was a veteran, having proudly served in the United States Army, and a member of the Orion American Legion for 35 years. He was a Boy Scout leader for 40 years in Sherrard and Rock Island. He also taught hunter's safety and ran the firing range for Scout camps for many years. He was a member of the Orion United Methodist Church.

He never met a stranger and will always be remembered as "fat, sassy and ornery."
