Alice Martha (Bachman) Heller was born on July 3, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan to Herbert Bachman and Alice (James) Bachman. She lived in Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Journalism. She met her future husband, Donald M. Heller, on a blind date and they relocated to Rock Island in 1960 so he could pursue his business in homebuilding. They were married for almost 60 years prior to his death.
Alice was the creator and editor of St. John’s Lutheran Church newsletter (The Informer) for over 40 years. She was also active with the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) at the church. She had a fondness for all things Robert Redford, Whitey’s ice cream, movies and anything chocolate! She will be remembered for the stellar jokes she told and her wit which was with her to the peaceful end. Those that knew her would say at 4 ft 9 inches, she would still command a room.
Her Lutheran Faith and love for her family never wavered. She always stood behind family and rooted them on for sporting events and academic achievements. However, she was very competitive at Bingo and loved playing the game ‘Grandma wins” with her grandchildren.
Those to honor her legacy include her sons, Christopher M. (Susan) Heller, Donald A. (Linda) Heller; grandchildren, Megan, (Drew) Ahlgren, Eric Heller, Sydney Heller. Also, her furry friends including Joey and her great granddogs, Bruno and Dale.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don and sister Margaret “Peg” Jackson.
The family would like to thank the Cedarhurst/Charter Memory Care family and Pastor Kent Umbarger for all their support and care.
