Arlyn "Shorty" M. Hancock, 87, of Moline formerly of Cambridge and Orion, died on January 31, 2015, at Amber Ridge Memory Care, Moline.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2015, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1001 9th Street, Orion. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2015, at the church. Burial will be at Glennwood Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to Orion High School Hall of Fame. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Orion, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Shorty was born on August 26, 1927, in Colona Township, IL, the son of Melvin and Lila Gainey Hancock. He married Marilyn J. Hogren on June 21, 1952, in Orion, and she preceded him in death on June 15, 1996. He worked as a farmer and for Clark Feed & Supply, retiring from farming in 1993. He was a veteran, having served as a medic in the United States Army.
Shorty graduated from Orion High School in 1945. During his time there, he played every sport that they offered. Later, he was inducted into Orion High School Hall of Fame. Shorty's love of sports continued on after high school. He also enjoyed the ever popular fast pitch softball including playing in the ISL World Tournament in Long Beach, CA, in 1958. He even continued to play golf until September 2014.
Shorty was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion and the Valley View Country Club. He was also a member of card club and former member of the Viking Club, where he enjoyed dancing.
