Bette J. Barnett, 91, of Rock Island, IL, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA.
Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and a private family graveside service will be held at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal, where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Richard. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Bette was born on July 9, 1922, in Mt. Pleasant, IA, the daughter of Carl and Isabelle (Baker) Mattson. She married Richard G. Barnett on October 14, 1944 in Starke, FL, while he was stationed at Camp Blanding during World War II. He preceded her in death on January 15, 2005.
Before marrying, Bette was a floral designer at Coleman Florist and The Garden Shop in Rock Island. When her husband returned from the war, injured and unable to walk, Bette took a job as a bookkeeper at Montgomery Ward to support them. Later, she drove him to Mayo Clinic for experimental disc surgery. Richard regained his health and Bette became a homemaker from then on. She loved spending time with her family, especially on their houseboat, cruising the Mississippi River.
Bette was a member of Two Rivers United Methodist Church, Audubon School and Eugene Field School PTAs, Y Wives Club, Rock Island Women's Club, and King's Daughters.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jane Barnett of Rock Island, IL; grandsons, Jeffrey Barnett Flaherty of Moline, and John "Jack" Barnett Flaherty of Rock Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Richard.
The family would like to thank Dr. David Ade, Dr. Reynaldo Castro, and the staff at Heartland Health Care Center in Moline, especially Speech Pathologist, Lynn Vance, for the compassionate care given to Bette in the final months of her life. The family would also like to thank Jeffrey Flaherty who visited his grandmother every day and provided kindness and love to her.
