Betty Johnson

July 18, 1928 — April 29, 2015

Betty L. Johnson, 86, formerly of Geneseo, IL, died Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center of Moline, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. May, 9, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at North Cemetery, Geneseo, IL. Memorials may be made to Braveheart Children's Advocacy Center in Cambridge, IL.

Betty was born on July 18, 1928, in Middletown, OH, the daughter of Thomas Wendell and Ollie Betty Hall Stamper. The family moved to Geneseo in 1933. She married Harry D. Johnson on September 4, 1946. After graduating cum laude from Black Hawk College in 1976, Betty worked at East Moline Mental Health Center. She later became self-employed in her home with a full time sewing business.

Betty then became a volunteer and an advocate for the mentally ill. From 1996-1999, as a volunteer, Betty was president and editor of the Depressive-Manic/Depressive Association of Henry County.

Betty had attended Homewood Evangelical Free Church in Moline and attended First United Methodist Church for 47 years. While involved with church activities, Betty enjoyed designing and distributing brochures, posters, tickets, church bulletins, newsletters, and children's coloring books which she volunteered her time to create. She took great joy in donating them to the church.

Betty and her husband had three children, Patricia A. (Gary) Mayo, Karen D. (Ron) Sommers, and Dr. Thomas D. (Debbie) Johnson; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and sister, Mrs. Ima Newell, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson, sister, and brother.
