Betty I. Lawson, 77, of Orion, IL, died Friday, February 15, 2013, at her home.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Beulah Presbyterian Church, 9221 148th Avenue, Orion, IL. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the Orion Lion's Club and Beulah Presbyterian Church. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. Orion is assisting the family with arrangements.
Betty was born on July 8, 1935, in Millersburg Township, Mercer County, IL, the daughter of Bert and Dora (Adams) Gritton. She married Roy Lawson in a double wedding ceremony with her best friend, husband Roy's sister Beulah on November 14, 1953, in Orion. Later Beulah and Betty had boys born on the same day.
Roy preceded her in death on September 22, 1986.
Betty was the Valedictorian of the Orion Class of 1953. She and her husband lived on a farm and house they built just outside Coal Valley for 28 years. She then lived in Orion for the last 18 years. Betty and Roy owned and operated the Roy Lawson Auction Company for over 14 years. She continued to run the Auction business after Roy's death and sold Real Estate through her own company before moving to Mel Foster in 1988 where she received numerous awards for sales. She retired in 2002. Throughout her life and prior to her illness, Betty was involved in many organizations. At Beulah Presbyterian Church she served an elder and Deacon. She was former Sunday school teacher and 4-H leader . She served 2 terms on the Orion School Board, was Rural Township Supervisor for 8 years and an election judge in Rural Township for many years. Betty held positions on the Rock Island County Board of Realtors and was former Secretary/Treasurer of the IL State Auctioneers Association. She was a member of numerous clubs including Orion Lions Club, Valley Sunrise Rotary Club, Red Hatter's of Orion, Orion Senior Citizens and the American Business Women's Association. She also belonged to investment clubs at St. Ambrose and Real Money Makers. Betty was a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International, a Lions Club Foundation Fellow and a Master Gardner. Betty loved flowers and was devoted to her family. One of the special events in her life was spending the day with future first lady Rosalyn Carter during her visit to the Quad Cities in 1976.
