Carl Melvin Rice, 78, of Davenport, IA, died Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at home.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal, where military honors will be conducted by the Moline American Legion Post 246. Those wishing to attend should meet at 10:15 a.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Memorials may be made to the family.
Carl was born on May 8, 1939, in Du Quoin, IL, the son of Alva and Gladys Cowley Rice. He attended Prairie County School and proudly served in the United States Army from 1963 – 1965. He married Barbara Jean Hedgepeth on March 9, 1963, in Galesburg, IL. Following his service, he worked for himself as a Masonry Contractor.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Rice; children, Debi Rice, Elkville, IL, Melvin (Tina) Rice, Fenton, IL, Brenda (Larry) Jones, Bennett, IA, Lisa (Ken) Kyle, Davenport, IA, Bill (Amy) Rice, Davenport, IA, Michelle (Warren) Holdt, Davenport, IA; 17 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; siblings, Steve Rice
Loren Rice, Pearle Rice, Glen Rice, Millie, Ken Rice, and Linda Polo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Dean Rice; siblings, Nelson Rice, Christina Keller, Wilma Cope, Alta Elder, and Margie Melvin.
