Daniel R. Breitenstein

Daniel R. Breitenstein, 69, of Lynn Center, passed away Monday September 11, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

A celebration of life gathering will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday October 14, 2023, at Swedona Lutheran Church, 1493 Knoxville Road, Lynn Center, IL.  Private inurnment will be held at Swedona Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to his family for a fund to be established. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Orion is assisting the family.

Dan was born on May 28, 1954, in Rock Island, IL, the son of Richard and Kathryn (Thorpe) Breitenstein. He married his high school sweetheart Mary Ellen Simmon on June 8, 1973, at Calvary Lutheran Church in New Windsor, IL. In 2014, he retired from the Rock Island Arsenal after 32 years of service. Dan traveled the world on various missions supporting the United States Armed Forces during his career as a program manager. He was involved in the Mercer County Zoning Board, an active member of the Prairie State Long Rifle Association and a member of Swedona Lutheran Church. Dan enjoyed restoring antique firearms and making handcrafted violins.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen; children, Shawn Breitenstein, New Windsor, Lacey (Steve) Woodward, New Windsor; grandchildren, Spencer Woodward, New Windsor, Madison Woodward, New Windsor, Alexys Breitenstein, Woodhull, Daniel Breitenstein, New Windsor, Matthew Breitenstein, New Windsor; father, Richard Breitenstein, Milan; and sister, Sue Anderson, Moline.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn Breitenstein.
