David "Swede" R. Westerlund, 56, of Coal Valley, died on November 20, 2014 at his residence.
A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Kirk, Huggins and Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. 1301 4 Street, Orion, Illinois. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Lutheran Cemetery, Orion. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church or to Abate of Illinois Toys For Tots.
Swede was born on February 27, 1958 in Moline, Illinois the son of Mahlon and Ruth M Peterson Westerlund.
Swede graduated from Orion High School in 1976 and from Spoon River College in 1978. He was named in the Who's Who of High School Athletes. Swede was currently employed in the Research and Development Department with John Deere and Co. as a Product Development Specialist. He had been employed there for 28 years and was a member of the IAM Union #1191. Swede enjoyed NASCAR, drag racing, riding his motorcycle and antique tractors.
He is survived by his brother, Marc Westerlund of Orion

Swede was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tom and an infant sister.
