In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Quad Citians Affirming Diversity (http://www.qcadoutforgood.org/) or QC Paws (http://qcpaws.org/). Casual attire has been requested.
Derik was born in Silvis, IL on February 21st, 1979 to Vickie Koker and Donald Dupont. Derik graduated from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and earned a Master degree in publishing from George Washington University. He was married to Jose L. Bueras-Dupont on March 10th, 2015.
Derik lived in Tucson, Arizona for several years while working for AOL.COM and travelled the world as part of his responsibilities. He then moved to Washington DC to work at the Washington Post before most recently calling Minneapolis home where he worked as a Sales Manager for Coughlan Companies.
Derik was a Master Gardner who relished the countless hours he spent tending to his plot at community gardens in Washington and Minneapolis, always enjoying and sharing the fruits of his labor by preparing a delicious meal with the day's haul. His love of food extended beyond his garden; he was also never known to turn down a generous slice of chocolate cake.
Derik had the most infectious laugh and a million dollar smile that lit up every room. He was genuinely interested in getting to know people, loved to hear about their background and always made an effort to make everyone he met feel special. Always the adventurer, he loved a new challenge and was never afraid to try new things, whether that was a new job or a new dish. He certainly had a mischievous side but was also the kindest man you could ever hope to meet.
Survivors include: His husband Jose Bueras-Dupont of Seattle, WA his parents Mark and Vickie Koker of Moline, IL and stepbrother Chad Koker of Denver, CO Aunt Jeanine and Gary Clapp of Sunrise Beach, MO and aunt Glenda-Jo and Kenneth Webb of Port Byron, IL.
Derik is preceded in death by Grandmother Donna Reber-Blake.
