Donald Heller, 84, of East Moline, IL, died Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1450 30th Avenue, East Moline. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 6, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or to We Grow Dreams, 1055 W. Washington Street, West Chicago, IL, 60185.
Donald was born on January 5, 1931, in Wilmette, IL, the son of Ernest R. and Mary Nackel Heller. He married Alice Bachman on August 27, 1955, in Detroit. He was a graduate of Michigan State and a veteran, having proudly served in the United States Navy.
Donald was the owner and operator of Heller Homes and a 3 time president of the Tri-County Home Builders Association. He enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Heller Homes Bowling Team. He also enjoyed watching Michigan State sporting events.
Donald was a member and elder of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he would tape Sunday services for shut in members. He conceived and led the construction and installation of the stained glass windows at church.
Donald loved traveling with his family. His favorite trip was with his son, Chris, to China to bring his granddaughter home. Donald and his son, Don, were avid rock collectors and often took adventurous trips together. He loved watching his granddaughter, Megan, play golf and his grandson, Eric, figure skate.
Above all, Donald was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
