Donald M. Peterson

August 7, 1952 — June 5, 2024

Moline

Donald M. Peterson, 71, of Moline, was peacefully called home to Heaven on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2024, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Moline, Illinois. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Geneva, Illinois.

Don was born August 7, 1952, the son of Rev. Donald G. and Grace (Forsberg) Peterson in Seattle, WA. He graduated from Geneva High School where he was a three-sport athlete: cross country, basketball and track. It is there that he met Carol, his loving wife of 51 years. He later attended Illinois Wesleyan University where he ran track.

He worked in various capacities at the family businesses of Melvin and Rainbow Electronics, building and managing a consumer electronics storefront in the burgeoning days of home video and Hi-Fi. His knack for identifying people’s needs and sourcing the right products led him to the position of Assistant Vice President at S&H Motivation.

Don and Carol were dedicated members of First Baptist Church in Geneva, where Don left his mark both figuratively and literally, having served as Building Committee Chair and Church Chairman. His love for the church community shone through in his willingness to lead and serve others, forming many life-long friendships.

A devoted father, Don took tremendous joy in watching his children pursue their unique passions.  He was involved in Scouting with son Andy and a constant presence on the sidelines of daughter Cherie’s athletic events.  Even as his mobility became limited, he was a source of support and encouragement to both of them.

Don was an integral part of the community at Hope Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation, where he resided since late 2018. He brightened the halls with his cheerful attitude, smile, and encouragement of others. He was also an avid crossword puzzler and word game aficionado.

Don is survived by his wife Carol; son Andy (Brooke) Peterson of Cary, NC; daughter Cherie (J.C.) Clark of Moline, IL; his grandchildren Grant, Sarah, Tyler, Griffin and Maddox; brother Stephen (Mabel Jean) of Wallingford, CT; and sister Carol of Moab, UT.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Christine, who died at birth, and his parents.

Don always maintained a strong and positive attitude despite the challenges he faced in over three decades living with M.S.  He will be dearly missed.

Memorials may be made to Wheels for the World at Joni & Friends, an international disability ministry.
