Donald Smith, 78, of Moline, IL, died Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior to the service Saturday, November 28, 2015, at Broadway Presbyterian Church, 710 23rd Street, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 27, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to his family for a fund to be established.
Donald was born on October 7, 1937, in Hannibal, MO, the son of Herb and Ida Rothfuss Smith. He married Helen Hantz on March 25, 1960, in East Moline, IL. He worked as a forman for Case New Holland until his retirement in 1993. Following his retirement, he continued to work for Case New Holland in Brazil.
Donald was a veteran, having proudly served in the United States Army. During his service, while stationed in Japan, he received a commendation for hanging a vital communication wire during typhoon. He was an avid hunter and a life member of the Bi State Sportsman Association in Colona, IL. He also shot in skeet tournaments.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Smith; children, Peter David (Terri) Smith, Davenport, IA, Lee Ann Dobereiner, Moline, IL, and Elizabeth (Tim) Krahl, Milan, IL; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Linda (Dale) Hurley, Elsberry, MO, and Diane Halley, East Moline, IL; brothers, Ronald Smith, MO, Ernest (Linda) Smith, Bettendorf, IA, Mike (Rita) Smith, Eldridge, IA, Larry Smith, Bettendorf, IA, and Dennis (Lori) Smith, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Adam Dobereiner; sister, Karen Sue Smith.
