Donna loved the water, having a fisherman father who would take her as a small child on his boat in and around the Andalusia sloughs. She also spent a great deal of time with her beloved grandma, Nancy McCannon, in the river town of Burlington, Iowa. Later she would develop a knack for doing hair and attended beauty school in Iowa. Shortly after graduation she married George William Shick on December 31, 1955, in Andalusia, Illinois. The couple lived in Moline, Illinois where she worked from home as a hairdresser while mothering her two young children. In 1972 the family moved to "the country" near Orion, Illinois. There Donna could be closer to nature and again live near water, this time a lake. Donna loved all things furry, and was responsible for saving the life of many a small mammal. She was one of few people lucky enough to lock eyes with a wild mountain lion and live to tell about it. She had an outgoing, humorous personality, a beautiful smile and sparkly eyes. She will be greatly missed by all those who loved her.
Donna is survived by her sister Joyce Stroud; son Scott Shick; daughter Colleen Scholz; son-in-law Peter Scholz; grandchildren Adam and Jared Scholz; nieces Lynette, Rachel and Janelle, and nephews Marlin, Lonnie, and Lale. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Shick, who passed away in 1999. She will be especially missed by her nearly life long friend and love, Bill Hines, and their dog, Jazzy.
