Dorothy Katherine Hall

February 23, 1919 — March 11, 2009

Dorothy Katherine Hall, 90, of Silvis, died March 11, 2009 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Rite of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. with a visitation one hour prior to service time. Burial will be in Dayton Corners Cemetery, Colona. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Dorothy was born on February 23, 1919, in Silvis, IL to Frank and Grace (Cain) Hall. She lived in that same house for her whole life. She was the youngest of three children, a brother Clyde Hall and a sister Marguerite (Sis) Hall-Dennhardt. She attended local schools and graduated from East Moline High School in 1937.
After working for the phone company for a year, Dorothy entered Augustana College and graduated in 1942 with a degree in Biological Sciences. She then began a teaching career at Rock Island High School. Dorothy returned to school during her summers, attending the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and the University of Illinois-Champaign, earning Masters degrees in biology and guidance counseling. She retired from teaching in 1977 and went to work as a switchboard operator at Scott Community College for many years where she enjoyed the social contact without the pressures of the classroom.
Dorothy was a strong, athletic person who loved skating, sledding, softball and hiking. An avid birder, she participated in local eagle counts and other bird related events and would spend time each winter at the river feeding 'her' birds.
A life long Catholic, Dorothy was active in her church, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Silvis. especially singing in the Christmas programs. Many of the church nuns were among her friends and she enjoyed day trips with them. She could participate in lively religious discussions, her positions being well professed. Dorothy was a good listener and would let a person finish without interrupting before giving her opinion, sometimes at great length.
Dorothy loved the Tri/Quad/ Quint Cities area and could never understand why anyone would want to leave. She loved the cities, country, the seasons change and the history of her home town area.
