Dorothy "Dot" Newcomb Nelson, 84, of Silvis, IL, died Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at Lighthouse at Silvis, Silvis, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2014, at Faith Lutheran Church, 1611 41st Street, Moline. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or to the Alzheimer's Association. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dot was born November 22, 1930, in Evanston, Illinois, to D.E. "John" Devitt and Mary Newcomb Devitt. She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL. She attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, IA, and later graduated from Marycrest College in Davenport.

She married Maurice "Ozzie" Nelson in 1954 in Davenport, IA. She was employed in the family business, Devitt's Jr. Boot Shop, Davenport and Moline, and she taught school at Butterworth Elementary in Moline for 23 years, retiring in 1993.

Dot enjoyed working with children, and in her earlier years was active in Girl Scouts. She also volunteered with pre-school mentally challenged children.

Music played a large part in Dot's life. She sang in various choirs for most of her life. She was a past member of the Quad-City Music Guild and sang in a number of their early productions. It was there she met her husband Maurice "Ozzie" Nelson. They were the first Music Guild couple to marry. She sang in choirs and played handbells in the churches she attended.

Dot was also a member of the Blackhawk Unit of Retired Teachers and Chapter IS of P.E.O. Sisterhood. Her other interests included genealogy, crosswords, reading, and golfing in her younger years.

Dot was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life, and she looked forward to attending their various school, musical, and sporting events.

Survivors include her daughter, Lori (Bruce) Dalfonso, Moline; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Erik) Olson, Winchester, CA, Alex Dalfonso, Chicago, IL, and Sarah Dalfonso, Moline, IL; great-grandchildren, Jakob and Johanna Olson, CA; and niece, Tara (Brent) Semler, NC.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Jim.
