Charlie graduated from Augustana College before attending dental school at The University of Illinois College of Dentistry, graduating in 1964. He was a Dental Corps Captain in the United States Air Force from 1964-1966. In 1966, he opened his own dental practice in Milan, Illinois where he served the community until his retirement in 2000. After retirement he continued his work at Whiteside County Public Health Dental Clinic and as a dental board examiner. He was active in the National ADA, Illinois State Dental Society, and local Rock Island District Dental Societies serving in a variety of leadership capacities over the years.
Charlie was an avid lover of the outdoors and adventure. He loved spending time in the beautiful mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado and his childhood cabin in northern Minnesota. A water and snow skier until past 80 who loved to golf, boat, and watch his beloved Chicago Bulls, Cubs, Bears and the Fighting Illini. His sense of adventure brought him all over the world from Ragbrai across Iowa to Helicopter skiing in Canada to rafting the Grand Canyon to the Matterhorn to the base camp of Mount Everest to his most recent trip to Israel in May of 2022. Charlie had a special gift of creating fun wherever he went, always the life of the party and strived hard to be a good listener.
Charlie had a life-long commitment to giving back that was second to none. He was an active part of over 20 medical mission trips to Kenya, Haiti, Nepal, Marshall Islands, Dominican Republic and Belize. He was an active volunteer at the Milan Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Arrowhead Ranch, and Christina’s Smile bus.
Charlie’s passion for adventure, fun and giving back were only surpassed by the love he had for his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Janis Johnson; beloved children Kristin (Steve) Purtell, Eric (Shari) Johnson, Tim Johnson, Lynn (John) Gripp; Dearly loved step-children Lauren (Nick) Stottler, Amy (Blake) Boe; His adoring grandchildren Ashly, Emily, Hannah, Madison, Andrew, Alex, Ethan, Jonathan, Chris, and Dominic; 3 great-grandchildren; and his cherished puppy, Denali.
