Ferne Ledin, 95, of Moline, IL, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012, at her home.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 19, 2012 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Moline, or to Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island.
Ferne was born on December 26, 1916 to William Riley and Ethel Rose (Henson) Russell of rural Creal Springs, IL. She started school in a one room school house with the teacher teaching all grades to eighth. After high school she went to Brown's Business College at Marion, IL. After graduating she went to work with Government Resettlement Administration who were building the Crab Orchard Lake located between Marion and Carbondale, IL. Starting in the Legal Department she later moved on to the Procurement Department. She married Percy J. Ledin June 30, 1938. He preceded her in death in 1987.
She was called to work at the Rock Island Arsenal in June of 1941. Ferne was there during WWII as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars working in the finance areas with most of her time in the R.I.A. Comptroller Office. In her later years she was Secretary to the Comptroller, retiring after 30 years. Retirement years were enjoyed working in the flowers and going on many bus trips. She was a Cubs fan and attended many games. She belonged to Club 60, ILLINI Quest, Black Hawk College Outreach, Trinity, and Republican Women. She also enjoyed volunteering.
