Jerry Hauersperger, (95), of Rock Island, Illinois, entered Eternal Life on July 4, 2015 at UnityPoint Health Trinity, Rock Island, Illinois.
Services with military honors will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friendship Manor, 1209 - 21st Avenue, Rock Island, IL. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jerry was born on October 2, 1919 in Urbana, Illinois, the son of George and Philomena Hauersperger and was one of nine children. He graduated from an honors high school program through the University of Illinois. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps at various United States bases from 1943 to 1946. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration in 1951.
He worked for the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago, Illinois, where he met his future wife, Mary Tolen. They were married on October 8, 1948 in Chicago. After working at the Denver, Colorado Federal Reserve Bank, Jerry and his family moved to LaGrange, Illinois in 1954. There, Jerry completed a twenty-five year career in Finance with the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors.
He took pride in his construction and mechanical projects. While living in Denver, he and a partner built a complete home as a business venture. Jerry spent many years as leader of his son's Sea Scout/Boy Scout troop. Their biggest project was the construction of a boat they took on a wilderness trip. Jerry had great interest in the automotive industry, following trends, driving General Motors cars, and handling almost all his own maintenance and repairs. He also enjoyed reading, playing cards, golfing, and family road trips.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary. Survivors include a daughter, Sheryl (Richard) Eckermann and son, Dean (Constance) Hauersperger; four grandchildren, Meryl, Paul, Kyle, and Devin; a great-granddaughter, Rosalyn.
