Fred Leroy Pope, Jr., 89, of Moline, IL, died Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline, IL.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Edgewood Baptist Church, 2704 38th Street, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday with a Masonic Service at 5 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal where Military Honors will be provided by Moline American Legion Post # 246. Memorials may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church.
Fred was born on May 15, 1923, in East Moline, IL, the son of Fred Leroy and Opal (Davis) Pope, Sr. In 1942, he graduated from Moline High School and later attended St. Ambrose and Blackhawk Colleges. He married Barbara Jane Sipes on June 29, 1946 in Moline, IL. He later married LaDean Ballard Curry on May 26, 1988, in Moline, IL. She preceded him in death. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942 and served in all five landings in the Pacific during WWII as a Corporal, where he carried machine guns and ammunition. Fred received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His name is listed in the Book of Honor-Court of Patriots in the Browning Museum at the Rock Island Arsenal. He served his apprenticeship for Moline Tool Company and later worked as an Industrial Specialist at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring after 32 years. Fred was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church and a former member of First Christian Church, Moline. He was a Lifetime Member of Moline Masonic Lodge 1014 and Zal Grotto. He loved to fish.
