Fred Stickler

Fred C. Stickler, 84, of Rock Island, IL, died Thursday, January 7, 2016, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church, 777 25th Avenue, East Moline, IL. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Fred was born on December 11, 1931, in Villisca, IA, the son of Donald H. and Martha E. Reese Stickler. He attended Villisca schools and graduated from Villisca High School in 1950. He attended Iowa State University, earning his B.S. degree in Agricultural Education in 1953 and a M.S. degree (Agronomy) at Kansas State University in 1955. He married Dorothy Ann Frahm on July 10, 1955, in Miles, IA, and she preceded him in death on January 24, 2014.

Fred completed his Ph.D. in Agronomy at Iowa State in 1958 and joined the faculty at Kansas State where he taught Crop Ecology and conducted research in Crop Management. In 1964, he joined the staff at the Engineering Research Division at Deere and Co. as a staff Agronomist. He later was appointed Director of the Deere Technical Center. He represented Deere on boards of various organizations such as the National Corn Growers Association, American Soybean Association, and the U.S. Feed Grains Council. In 1980, he became Director of Product and Market Planning, retiring in 1987.

A long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of East Moline, he served as an Elder and Deacon. As a member of the Two Rivers YMCA, he served as a board member and was President of the Board of Directors in 1984. In 2006, he became a 50-year member of the American Society of Agronomy.

Although an Illinois resident, his heart and soul resided in Iowa with Iowa people and his Iowa farm properties. He was elected to the Villisca Alumni and Friends Association Hall of Fame in 2013.

Above all, Fred was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather. He made family his priority. Survivors include his children, Mark (Joan) Stickler, Bettendorf, IA, Kent (Ann) Stickler, Eldridge, IA, and Lisa (Monte) Cook, Morton, IL; 5 grandchildren, Megan, Jessica, Lindsey, Collin and Ryan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Dorothy.
