Fredrick Riportella, 71, of Rock Island, IL, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, IL.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will be held at a later date. Military Honors will be provided by Moline American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047.
Fred was born on April 22, 1943, in Chicago, IL, the son of John and Mary Riportella. He graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago in 1973 with a Major in Business Management. He married Soma (Martens) Spector on June 15, 1979, in Rock Island, IL.
As an Investment Representative, Fred opened a new office for Edward Jones in Bettendorf, IA in 1992, building a very successful business. He retired in 2005. Prior to that, Fred was General Sales Manager for R.K. Dixon Co., Davenport, IA; Regional Marketing Director for Century 21 of Northern IL, Chicago, IL; and Sales Representative for CIBA Pharmaceutical Co., Chicago, IL. He also served his country in the Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
A loving, kind and gentle spirit, Fred respected and was respected by all who knew him. He was a long-standing member of the Rotary Club of Bettendorf. Fred was a fun person. He loved good times to laugh and debate. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing with his pals, Kent Witherspoon and Tom Mason. Fred and Soma shared special memories of their travels - especially loving the island of Lanai, Hawaii, and Rome, Italy, the country of his heritage. They looked forward to annual trips to their cottage in Bermuda, which became a second home to them.
Married for 35 wonderful years, they credited their enduring relationship to love, loyalty, and respect. He was her rock in their early life together, and she became his rock in the last years. If we could have only one wish, it would be to have him back.
