Geneva C. Thor of Moline, formerly of New Windsor and Orion, residing at Amber Ridge Assisted Living died on Sunday, February 9, 2014.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1001 9th Street, Orion. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014, at the church. Burial will be at Western Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Geneva Christine Lindgren Thor was born on August 5, 1923, in Rock Island County, the daughter of Carl O. Lindgren, who emigrated from Hinneyrd, Sweden, and his wife, Birdie May (Nelson) Lindgren. Mrs. Thor grew up in Orion and was raised in the Lutheran Church; there she sang in the choir. Mrs. Thor married Harry Thor, Jr. of Sherrard, IL, on May 31, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion. Mr. Thor died March 19, 1997.
Mrs. Thor graduated from Sherrard High School. She then attended Augustana College for two years studying music and taking private voice lessons with Dr. Veld and Annamarie Gerts of Chicago. At Augustana, Mrs. Thor gave recitals singing in Italian and German, along with being member of the Augustana Choir and singing in the Messiah under the direction of Dr. Veld. Mrs. Thor was a soloist at Broadway Presbyterian Church in Rock Island and other churches in the Quad Cities.
After their marriage, they moved to New Windsor; there Mrs. Thor directed the choirs at Calvary Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school for many years. After retiring form farming, they moved to Orion where Mrs. Thor was a member of the St. Paul church choir and bell choir. Mrs. Thor was the former President of St. Paul WELCA church society and was an active participant in the Carnation Society and Friendly Stitchers. Mrs. Thor was employed at the Admissions Office at Augustana College and later at Kraft Foods in Milan, IL as secretary to the office manager. Later, Mrs. Thor retired from the Metropolitan Airport Authority in 1989, as the Executive Secretary to the General Manager.
Survivors include her daughter, sons, and spouses: Christine and Fred De Pooter, Moline; Stephen and Charlene Thor, Orion; and Timothy and Beverly Thor, Orion. There are eight grandchildren, Stephen and Stacia De Pooter, James and Sarah De Pooter, Kierstin Goodnight and Matt Hann, Linnea De Pooter and fiancée, Steven Berg, Sarah Thor and fiancée, Rickie Jones, Matthew Thor, Dustin and Tara Thor, and Thomas Thor; fifteen great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Ann Lindgren, Moline, a brother-in-law, James Thor, Macomb, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Thor was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Thor, Jr., her parents Carl O. and Birdie Lindgren, a sister, Dorothy E. Lindgren, and brothers, Mahlon and his wife, Laurel Lindgren, Virgil Lindgren, and a grandchild, Jennifer Lynn Thor.
