George Sindelar Oles

George Sindelar Oles, 86 of Bettendorf, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Per George's request, his body has been donated to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for scientific purposes. A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at First Evangelical Free Church, Moline, IL. later this summer. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., is assisting the family.

George was born on February 26, 1936, in Chicago, the son of Mathew and Edith (Sindelar) Oles, Hinsdale, IL. He graduated from Hinsdale Central High School, Class of 1954. He excelled in track & field, and football. He earned a sports scholarship to Culver Stockton College in Canton, MO. While in college, he met and married Verna Leone McEndree on August 24, 1957, in Chicago. Settled in Downers Grove, IL. and welcomed sons Scott, Mark, & Mathew.

George began a teaching career at the Glen Ellyn (Hadley) Junior High School, Glen Ellyn, IL. teaching math and science as well as serving as the boys’ student counselor. He then pursued a career in sales with Firestone Tires in Arlington Heights, IL. and as an Account Executive with the Pioneer Press out of Saint Charles, IL.

In 1969, George accepted a position with the Masonite company and moved the family to Davenport. He was the chairman of the PEP Program with the City of Davenport during Kathy Kirshbaum’s term as Mayor. He later worked with the PEPCO Litho Inc. Cedar Rapids, IA

George is best known for establishing his talents providing fine painting, decorating & restoration services throughout the Quad Cities. He specialized in custom wallpaper installations and was featured in a Davenport Showcase Home. His attention to detail earned him a reputation amongst private homeowners, high-end interior designers, and furniture providers.

George was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church of Moline since 1972. He was active in the choir, served as a deacon, and deacon chairman. He lent his talents to the general maintenance and aesthetic needs in and around the church facility. He freely gave of his time to those in need, counseled many, yet always demonstrating his servant heart.

Survivors include his wife, Verna, sister Marge Dickinson, Galesburg, IL. sons, Mark Oles, Palm Springs, CA. Mathew (Karen) Oles, Davenport. grandchildren, Scott (Tabitha) Oles, Rock Island, Adam (Ellen) Oles, Shreveport, LA. and Rachel (Stephen) Smith, Davenport. great grandchildren, Lorcan, Torin, & Deaglan Oles, and 1 expected great grandchild late this summer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Scott, and his brother, John Oles.
