Gordon J Summy, 83, of Moline, passed away, March 18, 2024, at Silver Cross Nursing Home. 

Cremation rites have been accorded. Esterdahl Mortuary and Crematory, Ltd., Moline are assisting the family.

Gordon was born on June 18, 1940, in Waterloo, IA, the son of Opal Marie (Rubendal) and Glen Jay Summy. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Keith Richard Summy. 

Gordon worked as a Precision Grinder at the Rock Island Arsenal, and he also served in the US Army Reserve for 6 years. 

In his work, Gordon was part of the Rock Island Arsenal Cairo Egypt Program. He would make many extended trips to Cairo along with a select group who would carry out the program with their Egyptian counterparts. He had friends there who became like family over the years who mourn his passing. 

Gordon was a very generous and caring person. He volunteered for many years at the Arrowhead Ranch for at risk youth. He also was a jolly fellow and for years he played Santa Claus for many families in Illinois, Iowa, and Arkansas. 

He is survived by his sister Mary Ellen Dixon of Fort Smith, AR, nephew Derek Dixon (Tammy) of Alma, AR, niece Jill Dixon Taylor of Fort Smith, AR and great niece Gracie Bowman (Alex) of Huntsville, AR. 

Also preceding him in death were very special friends Betty and Burly Burlingame of Davenport, Iowa who were second family to him along with their extended family. 

During his last months some very dear friends of Gordon’s have been extremely supportive of him and a great source of strength and comfort to both him and his family. They are family as well.
