Harriet Smith Olson, 85, of Rock Island, IL, died Monday, January 26, 2015, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2015, at First Lutheran Church, 1230 5th Ave. Moline. There will be a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2015, at Petrie Cemetery, New Windsor. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday February 1, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory Ltd., 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Moline.
Harriet Adelaide Smith was born February 28, 1929, in New Windsor, IL, the daughter of Harry C. and Adelaide M. Smith. She married Charles A. Olson on February 5, 1967, in Moline and he preceded her in death on May 27, 1980. She grew spiritually and was confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church, New Windsor, IL.
Harriet graduated from Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses, Moline, IL, in 1950 and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Augustana College, Rock Island in 1954. In 1961, she graduated from Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, with a Master of Science Degree in Nursing.
She spent her entire career at Lutheran Hospital in Moline which later merged to become United Medical Center which is now UnityPoint Health/Trinity. She started as a staff nurse and went on to hold the positions of Assistant Instructor and Instructor in Medical-Surgical Nursing. Then she held the positions of Assistant Director and Director of Nursing Education in the Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses.
In her retirement, Harriet returned to Lutheran Hospital to found the Parish Nurse Program which still exists at Unity Point Health Rock Island to train and place parish nurses in local churches to provide compassionate, wholistic care. She mentored many nurses throughout her career.
Harriet was a member of First Lutheran Church in Moline. She served in numerous professional health care organizations and was well known as a capable community organizer.
Harriet was a generous giver to the Harriet Olson Learning Lab at the Trinity College of Nursing & Health Sciences as well as many other institutions, charities, and those in need. She was a good citizen.
Survivors include all of those she mentored as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
