Harry Nelson, 85, of Milan, IL, died Friday, March 13, 2015, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2015, at Riverside United Methodist Church, 712 16th Street, Moline. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorial funds have been established for Alternatives (for the Older Adult) and Disabled American Veterans.

Harry Edward Nelson was born May 29, 1929, in New Windsor, IL, the son of Earle and Beulah Nelson. He grew up in New Windsor and graduated from New Windsor High School in 1947. He served in the United States Army in Korea and was awarded a Bronze Star for his service.

His marriage to Mary Anderson took place September 26, 1953, in East Moline, IL, and they were married for 61 years. He was employed by the Moline Police Department for 20 years until he retired as Lieutenant Detective in 1983.

He spent many happy winters in Palm Harbor Florida during retirement and made many friends throughout the years.

Harry enjoyed family activities, golfing, gardening, fixing things, and running farm equipment. He was an exceptional husband, father, and grandfather and inspired all to live life to the fullest. He put others first and always found time to help friends and family.

Those surviving are his wife, Mary; three sons, Barry (Rhonda) Nelson, Brian (Tammy) Nelson, and Bruce Nelson; daughter, Kathy (Greg) Weiman; and his grandchildren, Megan (Matt) Boyd, Matthew Nelson, Amie (Mooch) King, Lisa Nelson (Cory Wildermuth), Edward Nelson, Anna Nelson, Ben Weiman, and Emily Weiman; and 7 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his siblings, Ronald Nelson, Karen Homer, Jim (Joann) Nelson, Mary Anne Potratz, and Terry (Janice) Nelson. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Stanley Nelson, Clifford Nelson, and Loretta Pheiffer.
