Hazel Auestad

Hazel Auestad, 101, of Moline, died on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the Amber Ridge Assisted Living in Moline.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Hazel May (Scott) Auestad, 101, of Moline, IL, will be 10 a.m on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at Esterdahl Mortuary in Moline, IL. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the service time. Burial and graveside services will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Madrid, IA, at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wesley Foundation at the Wesley United Methodist Church, in Vinton, IA.

Hazel was born on February 20, 1913, in Nashua, IA, to the late Ora and Sophia (Lange) Scott. The family later moved to Madrid, IA, and Hazel graduated from Madrid High School in 1930. She married Donald M. Auestad on June 2, 1940, in Vinton, IA. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1977. She was also preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Mary Scott.

Hazel was a 74-year member of the Methodist Church and a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton, IA, since 1965. She was a lifetime member of the Vinton Women's Club and a member of the Vinton American Legion Auxiliary for 60 years.

Hazel taught country school for several years, until her marriage. She was a homemaker when her children were small, and in later years, she worked as a secretary/bookkeeper while living in Newton, IA, and for the Vinton Clinic in Vinton, IA, from which she retired. She moved to Bettendorf, IA, in 1991 and lived there until she moved to Amber Ridge in Moline, IL, in 2013.

Hazel was a good cook and family and friends have many of her recipes. Her freezer always had cookies waiting for grandchildren and visitors. She liked to sew and do needlework and was a member of the Vinton Methodist Church's "Mission Stitchers" for many years. She made over fifty gowns, dresses and baby quilts each year that were sent to church missions overseas. After moving to Bettendorf, she enjoyed attending school activities and sporting events to support her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children: Janice (Robert) Erling, LeClaire, IA, and David Auestad, Moline, IL., grandchildren: Scott (Becky) Erling, Highlands Ranch, CO, Chad Erling and Brett Erling, LeClaire, IA, Jill Erling, Jackson, TN, and Paige Erling, Bettendorf, IA., and great-grandsons: Hudson and Cade Erling, Highlands Ranch, CO. Hazel is also survived by sisters, Oral Glenn, Colfax, CA, Doris Lincoln, Austin, MN, and Irene Hartman, Englewood, FL. and several nieces and nephews.
