Howard Dale McConnell

Howard Dale McConnell, age 88, East Moline, passed away January 17, 2014 at his home.
Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601 38 Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow services at Moline Memorial Park. Military rites will be accorded by Moline American Legion Post #246. The family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
Howard was born June 18th, 1925 to Dale Grant and Lillian Beaumont McConnell on the family farm in Soap Creek Township, Davis County near Drakesville, IA.
He attended Rural and Bloomfield grade schools and, for a time, high school until the death of his father in 1941. He then quit school in order to operate the family farm, supporting his widowed mother and his siblings.
At the later part of World War II, the family left the farm and he entered the US Navy, serving a tour of duty. He enlisted in the reserves and was called back to active duty during the Korean Conflict.
Howard worked as a substitute Iowa Rural mail carrier and later at various farm machinery plants in the Quad City area working as a machinist for 43 years, He retired from John Deere Harvester, East Moline in 1990 after 26 1/2 years of service.
On September 2, 1957 he married Doris Eileen Miller who passed away December 3, 1980. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Lillian Florence McConnell and a grandson, Mitchell Dale McConnell.
He is survived by two daughters, Alecia Lou Beyhl (Mark), Bettendorf, IA, and Melissia Ann Burhans (Harlan), Portland, TX. A son, Howard Dale McConnell, Moline, IL, a stepson, Daniel Lee (Bev), Silvis, IL, his long time companion, Nellie Power, and 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.. He is also survived by two sisters, Doris V. Lawson, Bloomfield, IA, Norma F. Courtney, Oskaloosa, IA and a brother, David B. McConnell, Huntsville, AL.
