James was born on June 8, 1927, on the old farm near Browning, MO, the son of James Nesbitt and Pearl Kimbrough Mundell. Mr. Mundell married Charlotte Elaine Nesser of Moline on September 10, 1949, at First Covenant Church of Moline, and she preceded him in death on September 28, 2007. He was a long time member of First Covenant Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee. Mr. Mundell was an avid landscaper and was in charge of maintaining the church property. Also, he was a member of the First Covenant Men’s Brotherhood.
Mr. Mundell was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force, having served as a Corporal during WWII from 1945 to 1947. He worked for 10 years at Strombeck-Becker Manufacturing in Moline before becoming a part of the John Deere organization. Mr. Mundell retired from John Deere Plow-Planter Industrial in Moline on September 30, 1987, after 28 and a half years of service as a tool room machinist. Prior to retirement, he started and was co-owner of Boymun Machine Company for 25 years. The business was sold in January 2003. He was very successful in the stock market over 30 years – as a Day Trader: Buy Low – Sell High.
He enjoyed his children and grandchildren. Everyone could always count on Mr. Mundell for a helping hand. He was known as the Can Man at church for many years turning returnable bottles and aluminum cans into thousands of dollars for church youth projects. He will surely be missed by many young minds that were touched by his generosity.
Survivors include his children, Marlyss (Steve) Vincent, Bettendorf, IA; Dr. Brian (Pat) Mundell, Muscatine, IA, Keith Mundell, Rock Island, IL, and Kevin (E. Scott Jackson) Mundell-Jackson, Lawrenceville, GA; grandsons, Matthew Mundell, Nathan Mundell, Derek Vincent; granddaughter, Emma Vincent; great grandson, Rowan Mundell; sisters, Ruth Viviani, Moline, IL, Phyllis (Walt) Dengler, Davenport, IA, and Joyce Aldridge, Galesburg, IL.
