James A. "Jim" Parks, 66, of Colona, IL, died Friday, December 26, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601-38th Avenue, Moline, IL. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 29, 2014, at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services. Memorials may be made to the family for a softball fund to be established in his name.
Jim was born on July 29, 1948, in Moline, IL, the son of James and Elizabeth Webb Parks. He married
Patricia Gerdes, and they divorced at a later time. He then married Ana Solis in June of 1975.
Jim was employed by the Rock Island Arsenal in various departments for over 30 years, retiring in 2008. Jim was very patriotic and proud that his last assignments involved protecting servicemen and women by supplementing the armor on Humvee doors and preparing FRS units for the Iraqi war effort.
Jim had a huge love of sports, beginning as a participant, leading to coaching, refereeing, and umpiring. He umpired for over 40 years, obtained the title of Umpire in Chief (UIC) for various softball associations, and was the National Softball Association (NSA) Western Illinois Area Fast Pitch UIC. Jim's service culminated in the huge honor of being the 2009 umpire inducted into the NSA Hall of Fame. He was an avid Hawkeye fan, and spending time with his grandchildren was a great joy in his life.
