Josephine "Jo" H. Swanberg, 83, of Moline, IL, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline, IL.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2900 Avenue of the Cities, Moline. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church in Moline or to First Lutheran Church in Moline.

Jo was born on October 27, 1930, in Warren, PA, the only child of Floyd and Hazel (Danielson) Carter. She married Rev. Dr. Kenneth H. Swanberg on March 28, 1953, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Jamestown, New York. Jo attended WCA School of Nursing in Jamestown, NY. She did her psychiatric rotation at Bellview Hospital in New York, NY, graduating in 1951 with her Registered Nurse Degree.

After graduation and through her later years, Jo worked in many capacities for several places. She began as the Assistant Director of Nursing in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. She was then a nurse in Ridgewood, NJ, then a nurse at Sparta, Michigan, followed by South Shore Hospital in Chicago. Jo was then a nurse and nurse educator at Freeport Memorial and Highland Community College. After her time there, she worked for Lutheran Hospital, Midstates Corp., Rock Island Convalescent Center, and Ridgecrest in Davenport, IA. She then became the Assistant Director of Nursing at Mercer County Hospital, and a private duty nurse and parish nurse. During her career, she volunteered as the camp nurse for various church camps including Camp Augustana and Camp Alpine. Jo worked as a college nurse at Augustana College. She worked as a registered nurse at various nursing homes, primarily in the Quad City area. She also belonged to the Illinois Nurses Association.

Jo and her husband, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Swanberg, were members of First Lutheran Church in Moline. She was a former member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Moline and at the time was involved with the Church Women's Guild, Bible study, choir, Sunday school teaching, WLCA, summer church camps, nursing, and Bible school. She assisted Rev. Ken with starting and revitalizing various churches.

She enjoyed African Violets, camping, raising Siamese cats, and was also an avid birdwatcher. Together, Jo and Ken enjoyed Church, family get-togethers, cooking, and fellowship with friends.

10 great grandchildren and 2 on the way

She was preceded in death by her parents.
