Angeliki "Julie" Skrevanos, 97, nee Spurgetis, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, November 24, 2013 in Boulder, Colorado. Born on August 28, 1916 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, she was the youngest of three daughters born to Thomas and Irene Spurgetis, of East Moline, Illinois.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, December 6, 2013, at St. George Greek Orthodox, Church, 2930 31st Avenue, Rock Island, IL. Burial will be at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.
After her mother died during the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918, two-year old Julie moved with her father and two older sisters, Nika and Mary, to Nebraska. She helped the Spurgetis uncles with farming the land, cooking, cleaning, and caring for all the new first cousins who were born to the uncles and their wives. When Julie was in her early teens, the family returned to the Quad-Cities, where she attended various schools, including United Township High School. She earned a Secretarial Certificate from a local business school, and worked at the Tank Arsenal in Bettendorf during WWII. In 1943, Julie married the love of her life, George C. Skrevanos, of East Moline, and followed him to Fort Worth, Texas, where he was stationed in the Army Air Corps during the war. Their first child, a daughter, was born to them while in Texas. After the war, Julie, George, and toddler Terry, returned to the Quad-Cities, finally settling in Moline, where they added two more daughters, Vicki and Renee, to their family.
Julie worked for the City of Moline for many years, first as Secretary to the City Engineer, then as Executive Secretary to Mayor James Arndt during his administration, and finally in the Water Department until her retirement.
Julie's love and devotion to her family and her Greek Orthodox faith were boundless and evident in everything she did. Along with George, she worked tirelessly for St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, as a Parish Council member, and as a lifetime member of Philoptochos, the philanthropic arm of the Orthodox Church, both as Officer and Board member. She was a frequent Chairwoman for many fund-raising events, including the St. George Annual Bake Sales, earning thousands of dollars for the Church. She was also instrumental in establishing a Junior Choir. She regularly attended the services and Bible studies offered by the Church.
After George passed away in 1984, Julie remained in Moline until 1997, when she moved to Champaign to be close to her eldest daughter. While there, she was an active member of Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church. In 2009, as her health declined, she moved to Boulder, Colorado, where her middle daughter had retired. She was followed to Colorado by her eldest daughter and her husband, when they retired in 2011, and by two of her grandchildren. Julie was always thrilled to see so many of her family on a regular basis.
Looking her best at all times was one of Julie's mantras, and she was always impeccably dressed. Even in the last four years of her life, while a resident of the Alzheimer's Care Facility, she delighted the staff with her habit of applying a little makeup each day and choosing the perfect necklace to compliment her outfit. Julie's other mantra in life was "Leave room for dessert!" She always had a chocolate bar tucked away in her purse, in case of a 'chocolate emergency'.
Julie's joyful, giving spirit and genuine warmth touched many lives and are a special gift she bestowed to her children, grandchildren, and Godchildren. Surviving Julie are her three daughters: Terry Benson (Jerry), Victoria Marchi (Steven), Renee Root (Scott); her grandchildren: Heather Benson Luedtke (Don), Chris Benson, Vincent Marchi, Joanna Marchi, and Nicholas Root; and two great-grandchildren: Matthew Luedtke and Erica Luedtke.
