Kenneth Maynard Johnston, 89, of Sherrard, IL, died Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline, IL.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Sherrard Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Orion American Legion Post 255. Following the service, a memorial gathering will be held at the Sherrard Fire Station. Memorials may be made to the Sherrard Fire Department or to the Wounded Warrior Project. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Kenneth was born on October 18, 1925, in Preemption, IL, the son of Ralph and Nellie Gibson Johnston. He married Shirley Kimbell in Milan, IL, on September 10, 1948. He worked as an incentive piece worker for John Deere for 35 years, retiring in 1983.

Kenneth was a veteran who earned the Bronze Star, having proudly served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a selfless person who loved doing things for other people. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing antiques. In his earlier years, he enjoyed gardening and fishing.

More than anything, Kenneth loved his family very much. His wife, sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were his whole world.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jerry; 3 brothers, James "Yank", Bob, and Eugene "Squeak"; sister, Helen.
