Lawrence Whiteside Steele, 67, of Aledo, died Friday, April 11, 2014 at his residence.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Broadway Presbyterian Church, 710-23rd Street, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601 38 Avenue, Moline. Burial is at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Military rites will be accorded by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the family.
Larry was born February 8, 1947 at Moline Public Hospital, the son of Hartwell and Bonnie Whiteside Steele. He married Kathlene Cowden on December 12, 1970 at Beulah Presbyterian Church in Orion, Illinois. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1965 and from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1983.
Larry was a United States Army veteran having served during the Vietnam War. He was employed by the City of Wheaton for 21 years as the City Horticulturalist retiring in 2005. Larry also taught Horticulture part time for 10 years at the College of DuPage. He also retired from T. Steele Construction in 2012 after 8 years.
Larry was a true gentleman and always had a kind word; he was a dedicated husband and family man affectionately known as "Uncle Lar". He had a wide range of interests including; various art mediums, gardening, woodworking, traveling, boating, hot rodding in his 1939 Chevy and many other things, but most important was his love of family, friends and Country. He was a lifelong learner and teacher. Larry loved Christmas and playing Santa Clause for the young and old alike. Above all he embraced life and all it had to offer. He will be missed by all who loved him.
