Leland J. Mohr, 62, of Coal Valley, IL, died Tuesday, May 06, 2014, at home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial will be at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal where military honors will be provided by Moline American Legion Post # 246. Memorials may be made to the Rock Island County Animal Shelter or his granddaughter's education fund.
Leland was born on May 27, 1951, in Rock Island, IL, the son of Jesse and Hellen (Strong) Mohr. He married Regina P. DeVooght on September 27, 1969, in Coal Valley, IL. He worked as an operator for Eagle's Warehouse, retiring in 2001 after 32 years of service. He also retired as the Coal Valley Fire Chief after 30 years.
Leland proudly served the United States Air Force during Vietnam with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded several high honors, including the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor, the Air Force Longevity Service Award, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm.
Leland was a volunteer at the Rock Island County Animal Shelter for 12 years. He enjoyed breakfast every month with the Eagle's retirement group. Leland loved gardening and enjoyed being outdoors. He was a Cincinnati Reds fan. Leland loved world traveling and went to every continent except Antarctica. He had a special bond with his granddaughter, Sydney.
