Leo L. Bartels, 89, of Moline, IL, died Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy, Quincy, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2015, at the funeral home. Per Leo's wishes, please dress casual. Burial will be at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal, where military honors will be conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America Post 299. Memorials may be made to the Illinois Veteran's Home, 1707 N 12th Street, Quincy, IL, 62301.
Leo was born on April 2, 1926, in Davenport, IA, the son of William Orly and Dora D. Dawson Bartels. He married Beverly L. Bailey on October 24, 1953, in Rock Island, IL. He worked as a toll testman for Illinois Bell for 35 years, retiring 1982.
Leo was a veteran, having proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He served as a 2nd Class Radioman and was part of the first wave to invade Okinawa.
Leo loved gardening and feeding the birds. He was a true craftsman and loved woodworking.
Survivors include his loving wife, Beverly; children, Linda (Chuck) Smith, Hartselle, AL, Michael (Carol) Bartels, Coal Valley, IL, Carol L. Bartels, Moline, IL, Breck Bartels, Moline, IL, Rhonda (Bill) Attwood, Moline, IL, Kim (Chuck) Hansen, Brighton, TN, and Todd (Wendy) Bartels, Davenport, IA; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; twin brother, Lyle L. (Bonnie) Bartels, Glenrock, WY; sister, Juanita Bockholder Bartels, Preston, ID.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.
