Lessie McSparren

February 11, 1914 — May 17, 2014

Lessie McSparren, 100, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Heritage Woods of Moline, her home since 2011. Prior to moving to Moline, she resided in Rock Island.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Private graveside services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Intouch Home Care Services (Lutheran Social Services of Illinois) or the Heritage Woods resident activity fund.

Lessie was the youngest of nine children born to Minnie (Forbes) Finney and David Finney on February 11, 1914 in Kentucky. She moved to Rock Island, IL in 1938 where she met the love of her life, Neal J. McSparren. They were married November 18, 1939 in Clinton, IA. Neal passed away in 1970.

Lessie was an outstanding cook and homemaker. She actively supported her daughters' school PTA's and the Memorial Heights Methodist Church Women's Club. Once widowed, she was employed by St. Anthony's Hospital and Augustana College, Rock Island. Throughout her life, Lessie enjoyed sewing, gardening, travel, bingo, reading, and most of all, her family. Lessie's garden won first place twice (1983 and again in 1987) in the R.I. Parks and Recreation annual garden contest. While the decision to give up her home in Rock Island and move to Heritage Woods Assisted Living Facility was difficult, Lessie truly loved each and every day in her new home and considered the staff and fellow residents her extended "family." She loved the daily planned activities/outings, her Birthday party celebrations, Holiday celebrations, and was absolutely thrilled when she was voted Queen at the 2013 Heritage Woods Sr. Prom. The final years were truly joyous.
