Louis Merritt Goddard Jr

Louis "Merritt" Goddard, Jr., 93 of Moline, IL, died on March 6, 2016, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Estate. Memorials may be made QCPaws or to The Jim and Trudy Maloof St. Jude Midwest Affiliate Clinic.

Merritt was born at home on February 4, 1923, in Moline, IL, the son of Louis Merritt and Madeline Lynch Goddard, Sr. He graduated from Rock Island High School. He married Georgia Ann Slater on September 19, 1942, at Memorial Christian in Rock Island, IL.

On January 28, 1946, Merritt began a Patternmaker Apprenticeship at the John Deere Plow Works. After becoming a journeyman, he worked as a salaried employee and in 1964 returned to the Quad Cities to work for John Deere Planter Works. He worked as an advanced engineering analyst for John Deere Harvester in Moline, for 38 years, retiring on February 28, 1982. Following his retirement, he and his wife, Georgia, spent time traveling and fishing.

Merritt was a member of Pattern Makers League of North America, the American Foundry Society, and the Plus 60 Club. He served in the United States Navy during WWII from 1943 in the South Pacific until 1945. He then served in the Naval reserve from 1945 until 1951.

Merritt enjoyed woodworking, fishing, playing cars, and working puzzles. He especially loved spending time with his daughters and later, his grandchildren. He will be missed more than could be said.

The best daddy ever is survived by his daughters, Patty Stinson, Andover, IL, Rebecca (Russ) Carlyle, Moline, IL, Jane (Glenn) Piliponis, East Moline, IL; 9 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; brother, Raymond Escondido, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, and sister.
