Lucille Anne Mitchell, 84, of Moline, IL, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline, after a brief illness.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Per her wishes cremation rites will be accorded and burial will be at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to Community of Christ or to Outreach International.
Lucille was born on October 19, 1928, in Dayton Corners, IL, the daughter of Roy Rollin and Edna Mae (Whitehouse) Sheppard. She married Donald L. Mitchell on October 23, 1949, in Moline. He preceded her in death in March of 2009. She earned her BA in Education at Augustana College in 1966 and her Master's in Education from Western Illinois University in 1972. Mrs. Mitchell was actively involved in education from 1962 - 1992. She was a teacher for Carbon Cliff Elementary School and the Moline School District as well as an Itinerant Teacher for the Gifted Program. Lucille was named Illinois Master Teacher for the State of Illinois in 1984. She received the Peace prize for United Cultural Convention in 2005 and was a member of the Illinois Education Association as well as the Moline Education Association. For Delta Kappa Gamma she was the program chairman from 1978 - 1979 and the recording secretary from 1980 - 1981. As an active member and elder in the priesthood of Community of Christ, Lucille served as counselor to the pastor for several years. It was there that she played the organ for 72 years. Lucille enjoyed playing the organ and piano, oil and water color painting, having her poetry published, and teaching Bible study classes. Lucille was a servant of god and a teacher of faith. She will be sorely missed.
