Moline

Martin M. Offergeld, 90, of Moline, passed away, February 8, 2024, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Moline.  The visitation will be from 9:30 until mass time.  Burial will follow at Moline Memorial Park where military honors will be conducted by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 299.  Memorials may be made to the Church or to the American Heart Association.  

Martin was born on September 23, 1933, in LaSalle, Illinois, the son of Martin C. and Julia Battaglia Offergeld.  He married Sandra R. Thomas on July 26, 1958, and she preceded him in death on May 22, 2019.

Martin graduated from Colorado College where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and lettered in football; he then went on to serve two years in the United States Army.   He was employed with MetLife in management and sales for 36 years, retiring in 1994 and qualified for the million-dollar roundtable four times.  He was a past member of Rock Island and Moline Rotary and the Knights of Columbus.  He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church where he was both a Lector and Eucharist Minister.

Martin enjoyed playing golf, tennis, table tennis and pinochle.  He competed in the Senior Olympics for 24 years in table tennis, golf, and basketball.  He competed in 5 Nationals earning numerous awards in table tennis singles and doubles.  He was a founding member of the Quad Cities table tennis club in Davenport.  Other honors from senior table tennis were being selected for the Prairie State Games “Athlete of the Year” in 1999 and inducted into the Prairie State Games Hall of Fame in 2003.  He was a fan of the Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and the Fighting Illini.  

Martin is survived by his children; Lori Offergeld of Chicago, Martin T. Offergeld of Atlanta, Georgia, Leslie Offergeld of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Michael Offergeld of Chicago; grandchildren; David Elovitz of Edwardsville and Anna Elovitz of Denver, Colorado.  Martin was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and other staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for the wonderful care and loving affection shown to Martin.

Above all was love for family and his motto for life was “put my faith and trust in God.”
