Mary E. Curnyn, 68, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Trinity Rock Island in hospice care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, February 7, 2011 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be held from 2:00 ~ 4:00 P.M., Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. with a prayer service at 1:30 P.M. Entombment will be at St. Mary's Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to the Mary Curnyn Memorial Fund and will be used to honor Mary's dedication to children.
Mary was born on December 3, 1942 in Geneseo to John and Virginia Baietto Buckley. She married Gerard Curnyn on February 19 in Geneseo. He preceded her in death on May 23, 2007.
Mary loved spending time and laughing with her family, grandchildren, and friends. She enjoyed reading and gardening. Mary was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rock Island. For 28 years she taught and was later the director at Red Shoes Pre Kindergarten, Augustana College. Mary volunteered at Logan Elementary School in Moline with the kindergarten classes. She enjoyed reading to children at Blessed Beginnings Pre School and volunteered at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Island, where she tutored at WOW and taught vacation bible school. She was twice the recipient of the Rock Island Yard of the Month Award.
