Melvin H. Steffen, 62, of Rock Island, died March 10, 2009 at his home.
Rite of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Cremation rites will follow services and inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum. Military honors will be conducted by Vietnam Veterans of America Chpt 299, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.
Melvin was born October 16, 1946 in Iowa Falls, IA to Louis and Eldora (Jantz) Steffen.
He married Charleen Shea on September 5, 1970 in Cambridge, MN. They renewed their vows on August 10, 1996 at St. Mary's in Moline.
Melvin was an Army veteran serving in the Vietnam War. He was a laborer for Labor Union #309 for 30 years. He retired in 1991. He later worked at the Abby Hotel in maintenance and retired in 2002 after 11 years.
Melvin was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. He was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Rock Island Conservation Club and enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting.
