Nancy A. Smart

Nancy A. Smart, 88, of East Moline, IL, passed away, May 19, 2026, at Silvis Center.

Private burial of Mr. and Mrs. Smart will take place at the Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded. Esterdahl Mortuary and Crematory, Ltd., Moline are assisting the family with arrangements.

Nancy was born on July 28, 1937, in Moline, IL, the daughter of Raymond and Nellie (Maas) Baraks. She married Roger W. Smart in her mother’s home in Coal Valley, IL, on December 10, 1960; he preceded her in death on January 17, 2021.

Nancy worked as a nurse until her retirement in 2000. She worked for the Illini Hospital and was on the Governor’s Board of Nurse Examiners within the state of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in East Moline. Nancy often did volunteer work for Beacon Harbor in the City of East Moline Visitors Center. For many years she knitted baby caps for newborn babies at several local hospitals in the area. Nancy was an active River Bandits Fan Club Member and Historian.

Survivors include her daughter, Julie Martinez-Hartvigsen of East Moline, IL; son, Gregory Smart of Bettendorf, IA; grandchildren, Brandon (Jennifer) Martinez of East Moline, IL, Rebecca Martinez of Moline, IL, and Heather (Dallas) Foss of East Moline, IL; great-grandchildren, Emily Martinez, Cayden Martinez, and Lily Martinez; brother, David (Georgia) Baraks of Coal Valley, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Joan Glaus, and brother Fred Baraks.
