Opal was born August 17, 1916, in Norton, Kansas, to Robert Elvin and Zola Williams Stamey. During her first two years she lived in a sod house, which is now a preserved historic site in Prairie Dog State Park west of Norton. Since then she has resided in the Quad Cities area, except for 1958 when she and her husband lived in Dubuque, Iowa, and from 1978 to 1993 when they lived in Tucson, Arizona. She married Thomas L. Severs on July 4, 1934 and they were married for 68 years when he died in 2002.
Throughout her adult years Opal enjoyed being a devoted wife and mother, full time homemaker and gracious hostess known for the delicious food she prepared. She was a gifted artist and loved to sew. In the 1940s she was employed as a playground attendant by the Moline Parks Department, then later as a sales associate at the former Carson-Pirie-Scott store, Moline. She and her husband belonged to the Airstream travel trailer caravan club for many years and frequently traveled the Southwestern United States and Mexico with friends. Opal was a member of Moline Gospel Temple, where she especially enjoyed the fellowship of her Sunday school class.
