Orva Angelina Carey, age 102, of Silvis, died Saturday, August 15, 2015, at Aspen Rehab & Health Care Center, Silvis.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at Ames Municipal Cemetery, Ames, IA. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. Moline is assisting the family.
Orva Angelina Halverson was born January 27, 1913, in Williams, Hamilton County, IA. Her father was Jens Halverson, whose parents were born in Bergen, Norway and mother Hilda Alvestad, who was born in Atavanger, Norway.
Orva grew up on a farm in Rose Grove Township, Hamilton County, IA. Her parents moved in 1921 to a farm in Seneca Township. She often reminisced of going to bring up the cows to be milked from the back pasture. She still loved making radishes and butter sandwiches she had as a child. Orva graduated from Seneca High School in 1932.
She married Ronald Leon Carey on November 27, 1936, in Princeton, Mercer County, MO. He died on September 18, 1973, in Ames, Story County, IA. They lived most of their married life in Ames, IA.
Orva enjoyed driving to the Ascension Lutheran Church on 7th Street, where she was a member and enjoyed having coffee and fellowship before the service. She had worked in the Drafting Department and worked her way up to be the Drafting Supervisor at the Iowa State Highway Commission in Ames, IA. She received "1972 Boss of the Year", from the Cyclone Chapter of the American Business Women's Association in Ames, IA. Orva and Ron were on couples bowling teams. She traveled all over the United States to participate in Bowling Matches on women's partners and quad teams. She had earned many bowling trophies. She was a life member of the Ames American Legion Auxiliary.
In 2005, she moved to Silvis, IL, to be closer to her family. She spent her last years at Aspen Rehab & Health Care Center in Silvis, IL. For her 100th Birthday, all three TV stations came to interview her and she was on all of the evening segments.
Her husband, Ronald, brothers, Jerrold, Jess and Robert, and sisters, Anna, Helen Esther, and Hattie, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Roger (Kathy) of Silvis, IL; granddaughters, Kelly, of Aurora, IL, and Lauri, of Utica, IL; great-grandson, Ryan, of Aurora; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
