Raymond R. Schwigen

Mr. Raymond R. Schwigen, 78, of Galesburg, died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Seminary Manor in Galesburg.
He was born on May 5, 1935 in Kewanee, Ill. the son of Raymond Sr. and Alice Dunbar Schwigen. He married Regina Stoneking of Rock Island in 1955. He later married Jacqueline Van Tine from Gladstone in 1986. She preceded him in death on January 31. 2004. He married Elizabeth Rinehart of Galesburg on September 10, 2005.
Ray was a graduate of Rock Island High School in 1953. He attended Bradley University and Western Illinois University, where he earned his bachelors and masters degrees. Ray began his teaching career in 1957 at Gladstone-Oquawka High School, where he taught English for three years. He later moved to Moline, where he taught at Glenview Junior High School in East Moline. He became the assistant principal for more than 20 years. He later was assistant principal and athletic director at Rushville High School for four years. Ray became principal at Union School District for six years. He retired in 1994.
Ray was a member of the Civil War Reenactment Group, Company D12th Infantry. He was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers and Knox County Retired Teachers Associations. He was an avid collector of American Wars artifacts. He enjoyed being with his family and former classmates. He attended the First United Methodist Church of Galesburg.
Ray is survived by his wife, Betsy of Galesburg; four sons, Mark (Pam) Schwigen of Maryville, Ill., Kraig (Lynn) Schwigen of Milan, Ill., Gary Schwigen of Rock Island, Ill., and Leonard (Patricia) Schwigen of Alhambra, Calif. He is also survived by his sister, Bonnie Woeckener of Andalusia, Ill. Ray had eight grandchildren. He also had seven great-grandchildren plus several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg. Rev. Sarah Wanck will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Galesburg following the service. An additional memorial visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Esterdahl Mortuary and Crematory, Ltd. in Moline. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Stockdale Military Museum, located at the VFW Post 2257, 1001 Michigan Ave., Galesburg, IL 61401, or the First United Methodist Church, 120 N. Kellogg St., Galesburg, IL 61401.
